In the Netherlands it is mandatory to file a Dutch tax return in 2 situations. Firstly, if you are invited by the Dutch tax authorities to file a tax return. Secondly, if you can reasonable expect that once you file a tax return, you would receive a tax assessment payable. If you would expect a tax assessment with a refund, we also advise you to file a tax return 😊. Please note that in most cases in a year of migration, you can expect a refund, see also next question.

How can I check if I can get a refund once I would file a Dutch return?

The filing deadline for a 2019 Dutch tax return is in principle May 1, 2020. However, we can apply for a filing extension on your behalf. Please contact us in that case.

If you file a 2019 Dutch tax return before April 1, 2020, you can expect an assessment / refund before July 1, 2020. If you file later than April 1, 2020 it usually takes 3-6 months before you will receive your refund or tax assessment payable.

The 30%-ruling is a beneficial tax ruling for employees recruited from abroad, that meet certain criteria. If the 30%-ruling is granted, your employer will reimburse 30% of your employment income free of tax.
